Iconic coffee cup

As everyone knows, it's very common to see people walking in the street with their coffee cup in New York.
One of the most famous one (forget about Starbucks, please!), is this one:

Looks Greek? Indeed!
As each group of immigrants in New York was bringing its part of culture and business, when Greek immigrants arrived in New York in the early 20th century, they brought their coffee culture along with them, giving birth to the city’s ubiquitous Greek diners and sidewalk pushcarts.

In 1963, the Sherri Cup Companyproduced a to-go coffee cup that would appeal to the Greek vendors. Marketing director Leslie Buck dreamed up a motif that included blue-and-white colors from the flag of Greece. His message, WE ARE HAPPY TO SERVE YOU, was printed in Greek-style letters

Currently, hundred of thousands of them are carried out of New York delis full of hot coffee! Due to the vast number of them, the length of time they have been around and New Yorkers' appreciation for their design, the cup has come to be a quintessential New York icon.

The best souvenir of New York to bring back to your coffee lovers friends!
And merci miss R!

Petite musique d'attente

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
Each one she passes goes, aaaaaah

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gently
That when she passes
Each one she passes goes, aaaaaah

Ooh, but he watches so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him

Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
He smiles, but she doesn't see

Ooh, but he sees her so sadly
How can he tell her he loves her
Yes, he would give his heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at him

Tall, and tan, and young, and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
He smiles, but she doesn't see

Do I look like I fell off the turnip truck!

This phrase "seems to be a good example of an entire class of catch phrases based on urban-rural rivalry.

The thrust of such phrases is, of course, that 'I am not a fool or a newcomer,' and, in this case, that 'I am not an ignorant country bumpkin who just arrived in the big city on a truck full of lowly turnips that I was
dumb enough, on top of everything else, to fall off of.'

This image of a bewildered hayseed ripe for fleecing by urban con artists is a close relative of more general phrases used to assert one's 'insider status' and thus intelligence or savvy.

The United States being a nation largely composed of immigrants, it's not surprising that the all-time most commonly heard phrase of this type is 'I didn't just get off the boat.'"

Stand up for Aziz

One of the coolest thing to do after a crazy day at work is going to one of those numerous comedy show all around the city. A nice venue for that is Cameo Gallery on Wednesday nights.

Nicely hidden in the backroom of the Lovin' Cup Café, Cameo is that kind of place which is not fancy at all but kind of charming with its local crowd, free beers and above all very interesting and eclectic artists.

You HAVE to check it out : http://cameony.blogspot.com/

So at Cameo, Wednesday nights = Big Terrific = a free, fun comedy show starting around 8:30 5come at 8 if you want to sit) with some newbees and also some show-biz stars dropping in. Tonight I have re-discovered Aziz Ansari, nice, nice, very nice!

If you need your weekly fun, the answer is easy : Cameomeo!

And here if you want to discover Aziz too:

Smile with Saint-Motel

No this is not a French cheese not even some religious day but the name of that band from L.A I have had the pleasure to discover this week-end in one of those Brooklylian cheap, cool and amazing concert venues.
Snow bowl effet: I'll write about the place soon of course!

I am not sure if this band is famous or what as they have been playing since 2007.
Young, fun, vitamined, there concerts are a mix of swag, pop, garage, indie, glam, happiness. Well they could be a good candidate for the Grand Journal jingles if you see what I mean.

Here are my 3 favorite songs, Put the volume up and wake uuuuuuuuup!

Why Wall Street?

If there is something I love doing, it is trying to know why this, why that, where something comes from...

I know we have been hearing a lot about Wall Street those days and History is kind of ironic when you look at it closer:

When the Dutch arrived to the new continent in the late 17th Century, they called the place they found "New Amsterdam" and built a wall to protect themselves from any attack.

Some people say that the name Wall Street comes from that wall that was then re-inforced ans kept by the British for some time. Other people will tell you tht it comes from the former Dutch name Waal Straat designating the Wallonite inhabitants.

I think it is both.
Anyway, there is no more wall today.
I mean at least physically but that is another story...

Manhattan Inn Brooklyn

Once passed the very north of Williamsburg appears the edge of Greenpoint where you have this interesting road called Manhattan avenue.

If you want to escape from the City for a bit but still keep a look on it, a little journey in Greepoint is a very good choice. Here, you will feel like being somewhere in the Eastern Europe, surrounded by Polish speaking people, Polish bakeries, a whole Polish neighborhood in fact. But also bunch of little boutiques, restaurants and venues where you will not have to empty your wallet nor stay on line for hours but still have a very good time.

A good example is Manhattan Inn.What is it?

 I would say a very pretty Brooklyn'touch-piano/bar-lounge-restaurant.

The lace lloks small first and then surprise : the backroom is like a journey itself with the piano in the middle the verrière on the roof and the tables all around. Exceptional place for a date, guys you will not even have to talk, she will be impressed, for sure!

I went there for a brunch.
Everyone was having the French toast which I guess is awesome whle I was feeling salty that day and had the omelette with portobello mushroomsn yummy!
The drinks are much less expensive than usual, $6 for a mimosa.

Let's go back one day for dinner, just call me whenever you are hungry.

They also have free concerts and events everyweek and a nice happy-hour ($3 a beer)

Drink at the post office

If you grew up in France, you mignt not like post offices at all.
For me, they have often represented a complete burden, a nightmare, hours of waiting for something that could be so simple.

That's maybe why I love the concept of this recently discovered post office which is, vous l'aurez devinez, not at all a place where you can post your letters but a nice and cozy bar, yeah!

The house specials are the whiskey-made cocktails. I am not a big fan but I must admit that they are very good, I feel like I need to try them all now.
Dim lights, wooden walls, a warmful bar with its open kitchen serving amazing deviled eggs, grilled chesse and some other snacks to help you find an alibi to stay longer.

A good way to discover the south side of Williamsburg, a bit less hipster, much more multicultural and as you should know, one of the best neighborhood of NYC, si si!
